CULTURA — RITUAL SERIES

In Rhythm With the Sea

A Cultura Feature by Bedda Vita

At Bedda Vita, we believe the stories we inherit can shape the way we move through the world. Cultura exists to honour those stories, the ones carried through family, memory, ritual, craftsmanship, and the quiet beauty of what is passed down.

In this feature, Adele reflects on heritage, artistry, and the Mediterranean rhythms that continue to shape the way she creates, gathers, and lives.

A story shaped by craftsmanship, ritual, and life lived in rhythm with the sea.

Ciao! I’m Adele, an artist and teacher based in Melbourne.

I handcraft jewellery and ceramics, and host workshops that celebrate the beauty of handmade art and Mediterranean hospitality.

With a background in archaeology, I’m fascinated by human craftsmanship and the influence of art and culture throughout history. My work is a natural extension of that curiosity, and I’m grateful to share offerings that bring people together, through handmade objects, storytelling, traditional food, and shared experience.

“Life unfolds slowly and simply, in rhythm with the sea and the seasons.”

I feel connected to my Italian heritage in many ways. My dad was born in Lipari, a tiny Mediterranean island off the coast of Sicily. Life unfolds slowly and simply, in rhythm with the sea and the seasons. Family and community is the heart of the island. Neighbours support one another, strangers invite you over for lunch, Nonna’s offer you biscotti while you shop for groceries, and early each morning, fishermen drive through the narrow streets calling out “pesce fresco!” the fresh catch of the day. It’s one very charming alarm clock!

The Mediterranean ethos of intentional living is embodied there, and I try to bring these values into my own life whenever possible.

The island’s history dates back to the Neolithic period, when people journeyed there to collect obsidian (volcanic glass) for their weapons and tools. The archaeology museum (Museo Archeologico Eoliano) overflows with artefacts from that era onward, tracing the various cultures that have ruled and shaped this tiny speck in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Time spent wandering those rooms deeply inspired me and continues to influence my creative practice. Bless the museum staff who kindly kept the doors open past closing while I lingered, completely captivated by all the treasures!

“I am grateful that my career allows me to express my culture and passions daily.”

I am grateful that my career allows me to express my culture and passions daily. My ceramic amphoras and gold charms, such as the Cornicello Amulet and Sardina Pendant, are direct links to my Italian heritage. The Relic Ring reflects my love of archaeology. The irregular ring band shape is my favourite detail, and reflects the way ancient treasures are often unearthed, shaped by the sands of time.

My workshops were created as a space for connection, not only with my students, but also with the small food businesses I’m fortunate to collaborate with. I believe both art and food offer connection through expression, passion and tradition. I’m naturally drawn to those who celebrate their culture through simple, wholesome cooking. This has led to some beautiful collaborations such as Gelato Cups with Cono Gelateria, Pasta Bowls with Super Norma, Amphora Vases with Capers Bar, and Espresso Cups with the former Monticello Pasticceria. It’s been the biggest joy to teach within my community, and I'm so grateful for the support these workshops receive.

Outside of work I love to spend time by the ocean, and cooking meals for family and friends, often sending them home with an extra bowl of pasta or interesting groceries. A little gesture that reminds me I’m becoming more like my parents (and grandparents) every day!

Con amore,
Adele

At Bedda Vita, we see stories like this as a reminder that culture is not held only in grand declarations, but in the intimacy of everyday life, in ritual, hospitality, craftsmanship, and the way beauty is shared with others.

Through Cultura, we hope to continue creating space for stories that honour identity, preserve heritage, and celebrate the quiet rituals that shape who we are.

Con amore,
